Fortifying the Path to Tier One
UTSA’s new GoldStar Initiative

Dr. Ricardo Romo

A new $40 million dollar program to recruit 60 new top-tier researchers over the next four years adds up to one really bright future for UTSA. The university’s GoldStar Initiative was introduced to the public recently by university president Ricardo Romo. GoldStar not only complements UTSA’s path to Tier One, the hirings will also align with the economic goals of San Antonio and the university’s vision to continue to build its team of world-class researchers.

In the first year, the GoldStar Initiative will focus on recruiting experts in research areas such as advanced materials, open-cloud computing and cyber security, big data, biomedicine, social and educational transformation, and sustainable communities. Under the new strategic initiative, UTSA will hire 15 additional researchers each year over four years—a vital part of the success of the university’s research and education efforts.

"I consider these hires to be some of the most crucial in our history," says Dr. Romo. "If San Antonio is to remain a leader in a global economy, it must have the high caliber of research that we conduct at UTSA."

To extend the impact of GoldStar, UTSA plans to increase the number of faculty position endowments from 61 to 80. Additionally, with support from the community, the university will create a significant number of new endowed fellowships to support graduate students.

We will hire a combination of well-established researchers and young researchers with great promise. They will light a passion for discovery and innovation in our students and help us build for the future,” shares Dr. Romo.
