UTSA as Tier One

Philanthropy shows value for education

Marjie French

In the latest edition of the Giving USA:The Annual Report on Philanthropy, the numbers show that U.S. charitable giving increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2013, with total donations estimated at $335 billion. Giving to education is the fastest growing area, making up about 16 percent of the gifts received. With a 4.4 percent increase overall, charitable giving has rebounded to pre-recession levels.

This news is particularly inspiring for UTSA and higher education as a whole, and speaks volumes about the value for education in our country. Gifts to UTSA are a part of that momentum and have brought us closer to Tier One than you probably realize—a goal we cannot accomplish without investment from alumni and friends.

So what will achieving Tier One status mean for UTSA?

UTSA will continue to be a leader locally and globally—creating even more jobs for the city of San Antonio and beyond, and contributing to a thriving economy. UTSA will not only be known as a pioneer in research and innovation, but as a beacon of hope for the future. We will continue to impact the lives of undergraduate and graduate students—introducing them to new knowledge and even more exciting discoveries. As a Tier One institution, UTSA will empower the next generation of researchers, scientists, engineers and teachers to solve the world’s most pressing issues.

As UTSA soars as a top-performing university, giving back to our community will remain a priority, making a great city an ever better place for all residents and visitors alike. And for our students and faculty, there will be endless possibilities for their professional and academic growth. Isn’t that inspiring?

The future of higher education looks bright, and so does the future of UTSA. Thanks to a tremendous amount of support from the community, longtime friends and supporters, UTSA is excelling toward our Tier One goal, and I hope you are proud to be a part of such an achievement.

Until next time,
