Top athletic facility supports top student-athlete
When the UTSA Track and Field team hosted its first meet in 2014, distance runner Nina Herrera described the experience as incredible. “It is such a great feeling to be able to practice and compete somewhere that is designated just for you,” said Nina, of the Park West Athletics complex.
The previous field was a shared space located at the Main Campus, which did not allow the team to host competitive races or meets. The new track at Park West, however, is the caliber that is needed to host international competitions.
The complex, which opened August 2013, was made possible in part by investment from Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, as well as private support that will build additional facilities. “I knew about the complex when I started at UTSA, but I wasn’t sure how soon it would be ready. I am grateful to have the opportunity to experience Park West, and I thank everyone who helped make it possible,” she says.
A mechanical engineering student, Nina continues to strive for excellence. As team captain, she is a top runner on the team that won a conference championship for the first time since 1996, at the Conference USA Cross Country Championships in November 2013.
“I feel proud when I can start a new season at the level I finished the previous season. We always want to do our best; especially at our home field. Having the new field definitely helps support our team and individual goals.”
