Alumni City Race Kicks-Off
UTSA student organizations have been raising funds for their projects this past semester with the university’s new crowdfunding platform, Launch UTSA. Now, UTSA alumni are jumping on board for a new fundraising challenge.
This summer, UTSA alumni from five different cities and regions are competing in the first-ever Alumni City Race. Alumni from Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and South Texas are using crowdfunding to reach a goal of $20,000 in 31 days. The challenge for each group is to see which region can get the word out to raise the most dollars, ultimately to benefit the university by providing scholarships and alumni programming.
“The Alumni City Race is a fun way to get involved with giving at UTSA. I hope we win, but either way we are doing something special for UTSA students by giving back to our alma mater,” says Derek Trimm ’13, who represents the DFW area.
The Alumni City Race, which started July 1, is part of UTSA’s initiative to increase alumni giving this fiscal year. With only two months left to reach the goal of 4,575 alumni donors for this fiscal year, the momentum is building as each city strives to raise the most money. So far, 3,400 alumni have made gifts to UTSA this fiscal year.
“This challenge directly impacts our alumni giving-participation rate, which for Tier One institutions, is a universal indicator of engaged and successful alumni,” says Genevieve Tobias, Assistant Director of Annual Giving at UTSA.
Donors to the winning city project will receive a medal; the city’s name will be added to an award and they will be recognized at the annual Alumni Gala this August. The winners will also have bragging rights and the reward of knowing that their hard work made a difference for fellow Roadrunners.
