What is a capital campaign?

A capital campaign is an opportunity to create a strong network of support for a university to raise gifts within a specific period of time. For UTSA, the campaign will secure resources to take the next step towards top-tier and build a culture of philanthropy among our constituents.

How much is the campaign trying to raise and what is it for?

Our initial goal is $120 million for a number of important programs across the university, including but not limited to: our students, our faculty, colleges, athletics, student affairs, community services, libraries, and the exceptional opportunities that will come as UTSA develops into an even stronger, world-class research university.

The early success of the campaign prompted UTSA to increase capital campaign goal to $175 million on May 6th, 2013.

When will the campaign be publicly announced?

April 12, 2012.

How long is the campaign?

The campaign is scheduled to conclude on August 31, 2015.

Doesn’t UTSA already get money from the state, why does UTSA need to raise money from individuals?

The state has and will continue to provide funding for the university, but that amount has become a smaller proportion of our budget every year. State appropriations make up about 28% of UTSA’s operating budget, down from 41% in FY02. Ten years ago, appropriations were $5,000 per student, now it’s about $4,000 per student. Both state appropriations and tuition provide for basic university expenses such as classes, professors, and administration. Gifts play a large role in UTSA’s advancement by providing a “margin of excellence.” Gift funds provide exceptional opportunities that make UTSA a place where students from all backgrounds can thrive and pursue excellence.

What gifts count toward the campaign goal?

All gifts, regardless of where they are designated, count as part of this campaign. So whether you support student activities, scholarships, outreach programs, or laboratories, your gift will help toward meeting the campaign goal.
